Reasons and benefits of pickling and phosphating steel strands .

Feb. 21, 2025

Ⅰ, Preparation for pickling and phosphating:

In the process of manufacturing steel strands, pickling and phosphating of raw materials (i.e. wire rods) is a very critical step in improving the corrosion resistance of steel strands. Many factories do not have this process, but our factory does.

Next, we will analyze the benefits of pickling and phosphating of steel strands from three aspects, so this article will be divided into three parts, namely the preparation for pickling and phosphating, the reasons for pickling and phosphating, and the benefits of pickling and phosphating.

Ⅰ, Preparation for pickling and phosphating:

In order to improve the mechanical properties and quality stability of wire rods, wire rods need to be aged before pickling and phosphating. The purpose is to eliminate or reduce the stress that occurs during the processing and improve the tensile strength and cross-sectional shrinkage of wire rods.

As the limitation period increases, the hydrogen ions in the wire rods react chemically with the cations in the air, and a layer of rust will be generated on the surface of the wire rods. Therefore, after the rust is removed by pickling, the oxygen content in the wire rods will decrease, which can effectively improve the quality stability and corrosion resistance of the wire rods and ensure that the quality of the products produced meets the requirements.

Reasons and benefits of pickling and phosphating steel strands .

The factory gave us two suggestions on the limitation period of wire rod:

1.Suggested limitation period of 15 days later for medium and low carbon wire rod, ф>10mm:suggested limitation period of 20 days later, in the winter: suggested limitation period of 25 days later;

2. High carbon wire rod (C>=0.60%):suggested limitation period of 20 days later, ф>10mm:suggested limitation period of 25 days later, in the winter: suggested limitation period of 30 days later.

After the limitation period expires, pickling and phosphating are carried out. The process is to use a phosphate-containing solution to chemically react with the surface of the raw material to form a phosphating film on the surface, thereby improving the corrosion resistance of the steel strand itself.
