What are the uses of common specifications of prestressed steel strands?

Mar. 13, 2025

15.24mm steel strand - This specification of steel strand is widely used in construction, bridges and other engineering fields. It is usually made of multiple steel wires and has high strength. In prestressed concrete structures, 15.24mm steel strand is often used as a material for applying prestress. By tensioning the steel strand, pre-compression stress is generated on the concrete components to improve the bearing capacity and crack resistance of the components. For example, in the box girder structure of a large bridge, a large number of 15.24mm steel strands are used to ensure the structural stability of the bridge.

12.7mm steel strand - It is also commonly used in engineering. Its diameter is smaller than that of 15.24mm steel strand, but it also has certain strength and toughness. It will be selected in some structures with high space requirements or slightly lower bearing capacity requirements. For example, the prestressed floor structure of some small buildings may use 12.7mm steel strand. It is also commonly used in the reinforcement and pulling of some industrial equipment.

12.5mm steel strand - The specifications are close to 12.7mm. It has similarities with the above two types of steel strands in terms of use, but due to its specific mechanical properties, it plays a role in some specific engineering scenarios. For example, in some places where there are certain restrictions on the weight of steel strands, but a certain strength needs to be guaranteed, 12.5mm steel strand may be a suitable choice. In some light steel structure buildings, it can be used for connection and reinforcement between components.

9.53mm steel strand - relatively small diameter. It is often used in places where the strength requirements of steel strands are not particularly high, but more flexible arrangements are needed. For example, in some decorative steel structure modeling, 9.53mm steel strand can be used as a pull line, which can play a certain fixed role, and because of its small diameter will not affect the overall beauty. It may also be used in some small agricultural facilities or simple building structures.

In practical applications, these different specifications of steel strands will be comprehensively selected and used according to the design requirements of specific projects, bearing capacity requirements, space conditions and cost and other factors.
