Effects of Winter Construction on Unbonded PC Steel Strand and Corresponding Solutions

Mar. 30, 2026

Low temperatures, strong winds, rain and snow during winter construction pose severe challenges to the performance of building materials. For unbonded steel strands, low temperatures affect not only construction operations but also the long-term durability of structures.

As a professional manufacturer and supplier, we fully understand the importance of material performance under harsh conditions. Therefore, in product development and production, we have specially enhanced requirements for low-temperature resistance, crack resistance and low friction, ensuring the safety and reliability of your winter construction projects.

Steel Strand Body: Toughness Test at Low Temperatures

Physical properties of high-carbon steel change in low-temperature environments, with reduced toughness and increased brittleness. Substandard steel strands are prone to micro-cracks during handling, threading or tensioning, leaving potential safety hazards. Meanwhile, temperature variations affect the elastic modulus of steel; poor material stability can lead to deviations in tension control.

Our products undergo strict stabilization treatment and low-temperature performance sampling inspection before delivery, using high-quality high-carbon steel wire rods to maintain excellent flexibility and extremely low relaxation rate even in severe cold. Regardless of ambient temperature changes, our steel strands provide stable and long-lasting prestress, laying a solid foundation for your engineering structures.

Anti-Corrosion Grease: Core Pain Point in Winter Construction

The "unbonded" effect of unbonded steel strands depends entirely on the grease layer. In winter, ordinary grease tends to increase sharply in viscosity or even harden and agglomerate at low temperatures, resulting in significantly increased friction during tensioning. This not only adds load to tensioning equipment but may also cause insufficient tension stress. More seriously, inferior grease easily cracks and drains under alternating hot and cold conditions, losing its anti-corrosion protection.

To address this pain point, we adopt high-quality special low-temperature resistant anti-corrosion grease. Even at -20°C, our grease maintains excellent fluidity and lubricity, ensuring smooth tensioning and minimizing friction loss. With strong adhesion and resistance to cracking, it continuously provides a tight rust-proof barrier for steel strands.

HDPE Sheathing: A Sturdy Armor Against Severe Cold

HDPE plastic tends to become brittle at low temperatures, which is the main cause of high sheathing damage rates in winter construction. Once the sheathing is cracked by a vibrator or pierced by sharp stones, rain and snow can infiltrate and directly corrode the inner steel strands, seriously affecting structural service life.

To solve this problem, we add low-temperature resistant modifiers to sheathing production and use virgin HDPE raw materials for extrusion. This gives our sheathing outstanding impact strength and toughness at low temperatures, effectively resisting mechanical damage during construction. Its tight sealing prevents the penetration of ice, snow, moisture and cement slurry, eliminating corrosion risks at the source.
